Nick Piombino’s latest book is Contradicta: Aphorisms from Green Integer, with illustrations by Toni Simon. “Contradicta: Aphorisms is almost impossible to put down” – Ron Silliman. Other books include: fait accompli (Heretical Texts), Free Fall (Otoliths), Theoretical Objects (Green Integer), The Boundary of Blur (Roof).

Pierre Joris is a poet, translator, essayist & anthologist. He has published over forty books, most recently Aljibar II (poems) and Justifying the Margins(essays). Recent translations include Paul Celan: Selections, and Lightduressby Paul Celan, which received the 2005 PEN Poetry Translation Award. With Jerome Rothenberg he edited the award-winning anthologies Poems for the Millennium (Volumes I & II).

This day–long symposium on the poetries of the Islamic world brings together

scholars, poets and writers from around the globe and features panel discussions and performances of classical, sung and contemporary poetry.

Location: BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center, 199 Chambers Street

Organized by Poets House & City Lore & presented in conjunction with the Asia Society & Borough of Manhattan Community College. Illuminated Verses is made possible through a special Bridging Cultures grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

A panel with readings examining the role of the word in the Moroccan and Egyptian vernaculars, constructing modern nation states in the Middle East, and cross-cultural encounters with European forms. With scholars Stefania Pandolfo and Clarisa Burt and poet/translator Pierre Joris.
