“Zeitgehöft” – 697 Gedichte von Paul Celan, für Sonifizierungsalgorithmus

Celan’s work has ‘inspired’ many composers over the last fifty years, though this one reaches a rare conceptual strangeness. The composer — Johannes Kreidler —used chance procedures to determine a specific pitch for each letter in the oeuvre. The poems are separated by a half-second pause. This one involves the poems of the posthumous volume ZeitgehöftTimestead. The instrument used to perform the score is the  “Steinspiel,” the “Stone-play,” a percussion instrument originally made specifically for Carl Orff’s operas Antigone and Oedipus Tyrannus. “Shaped like a keyboard, it is an arrangement of stone bars, struck by beaters held in player’s hand.”

My new wake up call! Honestly, how often would one listen to this end to end? It easily surpasses a “rare conceptual strangeness.” This orbits a planet not yet discovered. Pity I missed the video.
