Michel Calvet was born in Toulouse in 1956 where he also studied at L’ Ecole des Beaux Arts. His works favor expression and movement. They combine the energy and the force so characteristic of his spirit. Calvet’s paintings explore a variety of subjects – carnivals, harbors, jazz, town scenes, café terraces. His process is to release the particularities of the personal atmosphere almost to the point of abstraction. French art critic Alain Poeydomenge says:

“Calvet is a true artist and a sincere man, his art is in permanent evolution, and is never constrained by any limits. The only constraint he imposes on his palette is to plunge us into his world of light and happiness.”

Since 1980 Michel Calvet has been able to earn his living from his painting. The public’s enthusiasm for his original style has spurred a number of ongoing and permanent exhibitions of Calvet’s work.  His artwork can be found in private collections throughout the United States, Canada, Japan, England, Germany and of course France. His works have become regular features in art auctions and he has been recognized and listed in “Artists of the Toulousain School” published by Loubatières. He was awarded the Gold Medal at the Festival of Plaisance in Cannes in 1992.

Nicole Peyrafitte, born in the French Pyrenean town of Luchon, moved to the US in 1987 where she has lived ever since. She considers herself a Gasco-Rican (1/2 Gascon, 1/2 American) citizen of Brooklyn.  A true renaissance woman, she started out as a chef in her family’s hotel-restaurant, but soon switched from culinary to multimedia arts. For some 15 years now she has been combining these various art forms into complex multimedia performances that include voice, video, writing and cooking. She performs nationally and in Europe.  The three paintings on exhibition at The World Bar combine abstract colored surfaces, raised quasi-representational figures, and collaged photo-images of epic scenes that are anchored in prehistoric cave painting as well as borrowed public images in a post-Warholian world. As the poet-painter Claude Pélieu put it:

“Nicole Peyrafitte broadcasts the news of our chopped, exploded, fragmentary world. She kicks over the traces of the real and strolls through the subway of the emotions. Like Hannah Hoch, Valentine Hugo or Aude Ellouét, Nicole Peyrafitte shows us what an illusion reality is.”

Jean Pierre Rives, born the 31st of December, 1952 in Saint Simon, a suburb of Toulouse, France, revealed his passion for sculpture almost three decades ago and rapidly imposed himself as an unparalleled sculptor in the world of contemporary art. Well known for his world famous exploits as Captain of the French Rugby team in the 70s, we now find the same irresistible burst of strength in him as a sculptor and in his work. Jean Pierre Rives sculpture “Ribbons of Memory”, is a construction of cut and bent welded steel I-beams. He created this sculpture in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

“Each individual has a history at the heart of a community, the history of these communities are part of the memory of a nation. The respect of this memory guarantee’s us the present and assures us a future. Certain people carry this memory deep within themselves. Martin Luther King was one of the greatest among them.”

Since 1990, his works have dotted the international landscape, including the highly acclaimed “Sculpture by the Sea” exhibitions in Sydney and Perth, Australia, The Jardins du Luxembourg in Paris and most recently throughout the city of Brussels in Belgium. He is also in numerous private and corporate collections, such as Veolia, Cap Gemini, Schneider Electric, Axa, Bouygues, Sanofi, and Cartier in France.
